We've Got Time

I am not going to bother worrying that this cactus' roots will get under the house since it takes 150 years for a cactus to get to be the size of a man.

Kids, This is Harvey

The other day I was reading a book out loud and the word "invisible" came up. We talked about what it meant and I made a joke about my invisible rabbit standing next to me. The kids laughed, and we moved on with our day.

The next day we were reading again and I asked the class if they had any questions. One boy, who believes in all things magical, raised his hand and said: "Yeah, I want hear more about your rabbit."

Taking It As it Comes

I was teaching math yesterday and a woman comes into the room carrying a pallet of small plants and says: " Here are your cabbages. " Thus, concluding the most random exchange I've had since becoming a teacher.

( I later found out they were from a company who is giving cabbage plants to all 3rd graders in AZ.)

I made this tonight. It was pretty good and everything was in my pantry.

Tomato Artichoke Chicken

6 chicken breasts
1 can stewed tomatoes with juice
1 can small artichoke hearts
1 can cream of celery soup
bread crumbs
salt, pepper
parm. cheese

In a bowl combine tomatoes, artichoke and soup. In a skillet melt a pat of butter. Meanwhile, dredge chicken breasts in bread crumbs. Brown in skillet. Season with salt, pepper and parm. cheese. In baking dish, place browned chicken and spoon the tomato/artichoke/soup mixture over it. Bake at 350 for about 20 minutes.

Why Didn't Anyone Tell Me?

I  just overheard the following conversation:

Charlie: AJ, you can't fire me!
AJ: Your right, only Mom and Dad can fire you.

I'm thinking: Wait- I can fire the kids?

Christmas 2012

Here are some pictures from our trip. We had a great time and it was fun to see everyone.

The stockings are hung with care, except for the ones for my family that I forgot to bring. Luckily Mom had spares.

I like this picture because it makes Charlie look like he is from Whoville.

There are Mom's collection of needlepointed Santas.

There was a lot of teasing from the grownups about when we were going to actually start opening presents. Some ideas that were thrown around to keep the kids waiting were:

1) roasting the coffee beans and hand squeezing the orange juice
2) the first annual 5K run
3) reading the paper in it's entirety (including completing the crossword)

Luckily for the kids, the adults in their lives are out of shape and lazy, so they got to open presents fairly quickly.

As someone who lives in the desert, visiting the ocean was one of the highlights for me. I can feel myself relaxing just by being near the water.

Whoever said you marry a man like your father is insane. I have no idea what they are talking about.

My favorite brother.

We found a lot of horseshoe crab shells on the beach.

These are the trees by the entrance to the beach. I love them. They are so spooky.

Christmas dinner.

This is Mom's lemon tree on her back porch. She says they are pretty good lemons. This one was so heavy it was resting on the ground.

Shawn and I went out to lunch at the Lowcountry Backyard. The food was amazing. We ate inside, but I loved their outside seating and how the chairs were on a carpet of fallen leaves. When you don't have trees where you live, you get excited by things like this.

While we were there, we had our family photos taken by a local photographer. The weather was not cooperating and it was really, really, windy. But we did get this nice picture of the boys.

The boys got hold of the Lincoln Logs and made a town.

We did have better beach weather later on in the week.

Here, Charlie is trying to wipe off the sand on his feet while still being in the sand. AJ is looking on in exasperation.

This was a harbor by a restaurant that we ate at our last day.

The Trip To S.C.

Isn't he cute? It almost makes me forget that on the plane ride to S.C. he spilled hot coffee on me, spilled ice water on me, got sick on me and then fell asleep during the descent.
